Drink recipes: Bloody Mary – Part 5

Bloody Mary is a popular spicy cocktail which is often referred to as a spicy long drink’. The amount of spices in the drink can be varied depending upon the taste of the person. It is referred to as a long drink as it is supposed to be enjoyed sip by sip over the entire duration of the meal. As a result, this cocktail in served in high ball glasses. A high ball glass’ is a tall glass which has a large volume of about 6-8 ounces. The exact origin about the drink is not known for sure but it is believed that it was invented in 1920 by an American bartender called Fernand Petiot. He invented the drink in Harry’s New York bar by mixing equal quantities of tomato juice with vodka. Later in 1934 he modified the drink in order to make it spicier by adding some flavorings like Tabasco sauce, Worcestershire sauce, pepper, salt and some lemon juice. The recipe nowadays usually consists of two ounces of vodka, some crushed ice and about 6 ounces of tomato juice. To this, 5 drops of Tabasco sauce, 6 dashes of Worchester sauce, dash of lemon juice and some freshly ground pepper and salt are added to make a total volume of about 8 ounces. After adding the above ingredients to a high ball glass the contents are stirred for about 30 seconds with a bar spoon. A bar spoon is a long spoon made up of steel which is used to mix contents in a tall glass.. The drink is garnished with a celery stick or a lemon wedge. Celery stick serves a dual purpose, firstly it infuses its flavor into the drink secondly it can be used for regularly shaking the drink in order to mix the ground pepper which gradually settles to the bottom if the drink is kept for too long. A popular variation of bloody Mary is virgin Mary’. Virgin Mary basically is a mock tail which contains all the ingredients present in bloody Mary, except vodka. The name bloody Mary most likely refers to the blood-like color of the cocktail. The drink probably got its name bloody Mary as the color of the drink is blood-like.
This recipe was told to me by my brother is a bartender in a popular 5 star Hotel in Scotland. To find different contemporary and classical recipes for this cocktail visit the website: http://www.drinksmix.net/
Drink recipes: Stinger

The true origins of the “Stinger Drink have remained obscure and sexily elusive. It is considered a sophisticated after dinner drink. In fact the Stinger is even mentioned by Sir Cary Grant himself “Stingers, and keep them coming.” in the film Kiss Them For Me. Some say that the Stinger’s main ingredient (creme de menthe) was the high society way of masking the smell of liquor on the breath. Whatever the origins the Stinger is still considered an upper crust after dinner cocktail and is amazingly smooth going down. The following drink recipes are three variations of the drink.
2 oz cognac
1 oz white creme de menthe
Sprig of mint
Fill the cocktail shaker halfway with ice, add cognac and crme de menthe, and shake well. Strain into decorative cocktail glass. Garnish. Serves one.

Drink Recipes: Strawberry Fire Tea
July 31, 2009 by The Cocktail Lounge
Just the name Strawberry Fire Tea evokes the image of a drink as gorgeous as it is refreshing. Strawberries are an amazing little fruit that appeal to almost everyone and pair with tea very well.
Strawberries have a natural sweetness that make them such a versatile fruit. They are great eaten raw, served with dip, used in a multitude of desserts, or used in drinks. Young and old alike love strawberries so they are a great choice to incorporate into our menu when entertaining guests.
Strawberry Fire Tea can be enjoyed the year around by using frozen strawberries. However, since strawberries are in abundance fresh during the early summer, they make a delightfully tasty thirst quencher to serve at outdoor events. The following recipe will make one two-quart pitcher. Adjust the recipe to accommodate the number of guests you plan to serve.
STRAWBERRY FIRE TEA
INGREDIENTS:
1 1/2 teaspoons loose tea or 3-4 tea bags, black tea/orange pekoe variety
1 1/2 pints fresh strawberries
Additional fresh strawberries for garnish
1 fresh lemon, at room temperature
3/4 Cup white, granulated sugar
A fifth of Vodka, brand of your choice
1 Quart water
DIRECTIONS:
* Place loose tea or tea bags in a tea maker or coffee drip-o-lator pot designated for tea making only. Add one quart of water to the tea or coffee maker and turn the machine on.
* After the tea has been made, add the sugar to a two-quart pitcher and add the hot tea. Stir to mix well and dissolve the sugar.
* Allow the tea to cool approximately an hour at room temperature.
* Rinse and cap the 1 1/2 pints of strawberries. Wait to rinse the strawberries intended for garnish until time to serve the drinks.
* Extract the juice of the lemon and add the juice to the tea, discarding the rest of the lemon.
* Place the rinsed, capped strawberries in a blender and puree.
* Add the pureed strawberries to the tea and stir. Chill for at least two hours prior to time to serve.
* Place the vodka in the refrigerator to chill.
* At time to serve, rinse the strawberries for garnish, leaving the caps intact. Discard any berries that have imperfections.
* Finish filling the chilled pitcher of strawberry tea mixture with the chilled vodka.
* Serve over ice and garnish with a whole strawberry.
Any dish, dessert, or drink you make is always better when fresh ingredients are used. Always use fresh strawberries and a fresh lemon, when available, for this recipe.
Test the ripeness of the lemon by pushing against the skin with your thumb. If it is ripe and juicy, you will be able to press it in a little with your thumb. If it is hard, look for another lemon.
You can serve the drinks individually poured and garnished by you. You could also place the strawberries for garnish in a bowl beside the pitcher of Strawberry Fire Tea and allow the guests to pour their own drinks.
If children will be in attendance, do not forget to make a pitcher of the tea without the fire of the vodka for them. It is simple to alter the recipe by filling the children’s pitcher with cold water in place of the vodka. Children are naturally drawn to brightly colored drinks and most children love strawberries enough to really like strawberry tea. It is also good to have a pitcher without the vodka available for adults who cannot imbibe, whether children will be present or not. If children will be in attendance, it would be best to serve the adult drinks individually to avoid an accident.
It Does Not Always Take An Hour To Get Happy
July 31, 2009 by The Cocktail Lounge
How long it takes a person to get happy will depend on the type of alcoholic beverage they are downing and how fast, but for most people it is not going to take the full 60-minutes of any happy hour to change their mood. Actually, happy hour may be a misnomer as most public watering holes offer a special price on certain drinks for longer than an hour, many times pushing it to two or three, and sometimes even longer for special events and holidays.
The origins of the term happy hour is somewhat vague, with reference to a news story in the Providence, Rhode Island local rag on July 4, 1961 as a reference to a bar closing down before patrons had a chance to take advantage of the full happy hour. Additional attributes go to some British songs that used the term for rhyming words for flowers, but the best reason for the term comes from its purpose. At any local bar, club or pub when patrons can get a reduced price on drinks, they are generally happy.
A patron can walk into almost any establishment with a liquor license and find times posted for a happy hour, typically in late afternoon or early evening, giving those on their way home from work a chance to tip a few at a lower cost as well as to draw in new patrons to the bar. Many of the locations extend the times posted for reduced drink prices beyond 60 expected minutes to allow the crowd to turn over once or twice before ending the reduced prices.
Contrary to what some may believe, happy hour is not designed to get rid of extra beer that may be going stale. Chances of beer going bad in a successful bar is almost nil and when they add some mixed drinks such as a bloody Mary, mint juleps, vodka shots and even marguerites to the happy hour menu, it draws in a more diverse clientele. While no establishment is going to be able to please everyone that walks through the door with its drink selection, pleasing most is usually enough to bring the patrons back again.
Many times, establishments will offer a happy hour or two just before live entertainment takes the stage, to help get people in the mood for dancing, eating and more drinking. Keeping everyone in the bar happy is the owner’s main concern, and a few drinks offered at a special price will often help them succeed. Bar owners also have the challenge of making sure that everyone in the place stays happy, as some patrons may not be able to remain calm and friendly after spending too much time on the drink specials.
Patrons have to remember that simply because it is happy hour does not mean they have to try to drink the well dry. Anyone visiting any bat is reminded to drink responsibly and to always have a designated driver in the group to make sure everyone survives happy hour and make it home safely.
What Can You Drink To Relieve Heartburn Pain?
July 31, 2009 by The Cocktail Lounge
There are many things a person can do to help relieve some of the pain that comes with a bout of heartburn. Medications and diet modifications are great, but there are some simple rules about what to drink to relieve heartburn that might help.
Though being aware of what you are drinking is something someone with severe acid reflux has to worry about, it can also help those who only seem to have an occasional problem.
Knowing what to drink and what is best to avoid is always great information for anyone suffering from GERD, especially when symptoms seem to be going downhill.
Though avoiding drinking certain drinks won’t generally fix the problem, it can help. People don’t think that what they drink is as important as what they eat, but choosing the right things might make all of the difference.
Some beverages are known to make pain and discomfort worse, and they should be avoided almost all of the time. The drinks to be avoided are the ones that tend to promote excess stomach acid production, and knowing which ones do that, paired with knowing what is great to drink, can help you in your search for some relief.
When it comes to acid-stimulating drinks, there are unfortunately many that need to be avoided. One type of drink in particular seems to cause the most problems – citrus based drinks.
Eating citrus fruits can aggravate GERD, and drinking the juice from them will have the same affect. Pineapple and orange juice are two big offenders. These aren’t just for breakfast either, as there are many mixed alcoholic drinks that use them as an ingredient. It is always a good idea to ask what goes into a drink before ordering. Tomato juice will do the same thing, and is also an ingredient in some drinks. Alcohol in general is not a good idea for those with GERD, so the answer might be to skip any and all alcoholic drinks, especially during a flare-up.
No one wants to hear this, but caffeine can also trigger acid reflux pain. Caffeine is very common in many popular drinks, and that makes it hard to avoid. Even worse, many feel they need their morning coffee to get going.
Giving up caffeine is hard, and to avoid headaches, it might be best to reduce your consumption slowly each day until you reach a point you’re caffeine free. Coffee, tea, and soda all have this ingredient if you buy the regular type. It would be far better to buy the decaffeinated versions of all of those to avoid the discomfort. However, it is worth noting that even the decaf version can cause problems for some people, so be prepared to give up these drinks for good.
By far, the best drink for those with acid reflux is good old-fashioned plain water. The more water a person can drink the better. This helps keep the system moving so the acid is not sitting in the stomach, and it will not stimulate the stomach to make more.
Some people can drink milk to relieve the pain of GERD, but its not suitable for everyone. Low-fat milk might be better as a drink to relieve heartburn. Drinking lots of milk (if agreeable) and water will help keep the acid in check, and also has great health benefits as well.
Great seafood recipes and wine combinations

A recipe for an evening of entertaining that will keep your guest talking until Christmas. This is a complete menu plan that will cause your mouth to water just reading the recipes and preparations. A very good friend and neighbor and I have prepared dinners for up to 100 that were entertained in our homes. We lived next door to each other in a private waterfront community of 38 homes. That was over thirty years ago, yet it feels like it was only yesterday. I am going to relive my memories today by passing along one of our dinner parties that six of us enjoyed.
A Semi Homemade Dinner makes life easier but very enjoyable
First Course; Shrimp Cocktail (U-9s 4 per serving)
24- U9 count shrimp buy 3# (27) you can sample the other three while you are preparing the meal
seafood cocktail sauce; Heinze Chili sauce, Silver Floss Horseradish, Flat Leaf Parsley
combine all ingredients in food processor, and course chop, you done
Arrange in short sundae cup or champagne glass with shrimp draped over edge.
Second Course; Cantaloupe wrapped in Maple Ham
Cantaloupe to be cut into six wedges, remove from rind
Maple Flavored Ham sliced deli style
Arrange by wrapping ham around Cantaloupe cover with plastic wrap, refrigerate until serving
Entree; Red Snapper Filet’s (6) Scaled and cleaned
2 packages of Uncle Ben’s long grain and wild rice
1 package of Pepperidge Farms sage stuffing
use liquids called for on both items plus a couple of extra tablespoons of butter or margarine
Mix Rice and Stuffing together and place in 9×13 Glass baking dish
Place Red Snapper Filet’s skin side up on top of stuffing and rice
baked on a bed of stuffing with Uncle Ben’s long grain wild rice
melt 2 tablespoons of butter or margarine in glass measuring cup add a couple of tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil to this mixture and drizzle ovre fish.
slice two lemons about an 1/8 thick and lay on top of fish
cover dish with foil and place in 350 degree preheated oven for 20-30 minutes checking to see if fish will flake when you insert a steak knife and gently twist to see is fish separates do not cut or twist to hard to brake apart.
This meal can be planned and ready for your guest to eat after a 30 minute cocktail and a simple hors d’oeuvre like Brie and crackers
Beverages; serve refreshments and cocktails upon your guests arrival and a half hour or so to visit. You should do your homework here and make sure you have your guest favorite beverage and mixes on hand.
My preference of wine with this dinner is a crisp cold Pinot Grigio, I usually plan to have a bottle for every two people in this case have four chilled bottles in the fridge. I serve this with the first course and right on through the entree. Some of your guest might prefer to continue drinking the wine after dining.
Coffee is prepared without asking then offer to those who wish to accept.
Desert; Fresh strawberries on shortcakes made from Bisquick topped with Whipped Cream.
From this point I bid you good evening and you are now on your own as to how your dinner party winds up. Best Wishes to you and your friends,
Energy drinks: Negative health effects – Part 1

The New Energy – Liquid Crack In A Can
So you’re low on energy and coffee doesn’t cut it anymore? A popular alternative in liquid energy comes in small, bright cans, packing a big punch. Walk into any convenience or grocery store, and you’ll see various brands of Red Bull, Adrenaline Rush, Full Throttle, and Monster Energy. They’re a new breed of energy drinks, with stiff doses of caffeine, sugar, and a mixed bag of vitamins, amino acids and herbs.
Millions around the world consume them to receive that extra energy needed to survive the day. Bar hoppers mix them with vodka to party longer and students use them to pull all-night study sessions. Even athletes are hopping on the wagon as a boost to their performance.
But now they’re being flagged by some health experts as a potential health danger. According to a study published in the Journal of Analytical Toxicology, these and other drinks can contain ingredients which stress the immune system if consumed excessively or over the long haul.
Unfounded Claims?
Red Bull, arguably the most popular energy drink worldwide, states that their formula is scientifically formulated to “provide energy, vitalize the mind, improve concentration and reaction time.”
But many nutrition professionals remain unconvinced, noting that caffeine is the primary working ingredient. In a report last month, Consumer Reports on Health criticized energy drinks for having ” ‘extras’ you don’t need.” The publication said these beverages “contain mostly sugar and caffeine, with other ingredients having little benefit or being untested.”
Red Bull contains about 80 mg of caffeine per 8 ounce can. While this is more than double that of a Coca-Cola Classic, it’s no more than your average cup of coffee. But now there’s a new breed of these super charged liquid stallions, led by a drink called “Cocaine.” Also available in an 8.4 ounce can, it contains a whopping 280 milligrams of caffeine. According to the company’s Web site, the only way to get more caffeine per ounce is with an espresso.
A September 28, 2006 CBC article quoted Jamey Kirby, the drink’s inventor, as saying “the beverage is 350 percent stronger than Red Bull. The “high” hits within five minutes, followed by an energetic, buzzed out ride fifteen minutes later, which lasts five to six hours.”
With such an extreme high, this huge wallop of legal stimulants can be intense for anyone, especially kids. Of course energy drink manufacturers deny marketing to
The Verizon Heritage: Hitting A Ball And Having A Ball On Hilton Head Island
July 30, 2009 by The Cocktail Lounge

A little sand, a little surf, and a lot of golf. That’s the recipe for the week of April 14-20th 2008 on Hilton Head Island, otherwise known as Verizon Heritage week around these parts. If your are headed this way as a Heritage player or spectator, let it be known that Hilton Head knows what hospitality and a good time is all about – on and off the greens. Check out this guide to the best of Hilton Head Island, and let the good times roll!
The Verizon Heritage Golf Tournament has been played on the famed Harbour Town Golf Links at the Sea Pines Resort in Hilton Head Island, SC every year since 1969. The host course was designed by Pete Dye, with input from Jack Nicklaus. Known to locals as “The Heritage”, South Carolina’s only PGA TOUR event has been scheduled during the week following the Masters since 1983. This year’s Verizon Heritage will be April 14 -20, 2008.
The tournament’s Pro-Am is a great way to entertain clients as well as spend time with a PGA professional. The price for the Pro-Am event includes a free round of golf, eight clubhouse badges, weekly parking pass, gift packages, and much more. The Heritage Classic Foundation is the general sponsor of the tournament. The local support of generous sponsors, helpful volunteers, and countless spectators make this a must attend event every year. Since it was founded in 1987 as a not-for-profit organization, the Foundation has helped thousands of people in need throughout the area and state. In 2007, the Heritage Classic Foundation was honored to donate $1.8 million dollars, bringing the total to more than $16.6 million since it was organized. Past winners of the Heritage include Arnold Palmer, Tom Watson, Payne Stewart, Greg Norman, Nick Price, Hale Irwin, Davis Love III, and Jack Nicklaus. A record purse of $5.5 million dollars, with $990,000 going to the winner, makes this year’s tournament win more sought after than ever.
If you’ve never played at Harbourtown, give yourself a treat and come in a few days early or stay a few days after the tournament to get in a round at this much hailed course. Just walking up the green on the 18th will make you feel like tipping your hat to the invisible crowd.
But, contrary to popular belief, man (and woman) cannot live by golf alone. Hilton Head Island has made it pretty easy to enjoy every moment you are here on our little paradise, from relaxing in great accommodations to hopping on a dolphin tour to getting a champion level massage. So during your trip to experience the Heritage, experience some of these offerings also:
Hilton Head Accommodation Options
Hilton Head Island is a highly sought after resort destination, so it goes without saying that there are plenty of great places to stay, but I will say it anyway – there are plenty of great places to stay on Hilton Head Island. Luxury Hotels, golf villas, ocean front homes, whatever your style, it can be found here.
For great ocean front hotel accommodations, there is the Westin Resort and Spa, the Hilton Oceanside Resort and the Marriott Resort and Spa, along with a host of several smaller or less expensive choices for your stay. The Holiday Inn Oceanfront is a nice choice for families, with plenty of white sand beach on which to run and play, while claiming one of the more famous watering holes on the island – namely the Tiki Hut. For a more quiet and yes, romantic respite, the Main Street Inn is quaint, beautifully decorated and brimming with hospitality. Hotel rooms are at a premium during the Heritage, and as expected the prices are higher as well. Don’t let that scare you – it’s not that much more. Besides, you deserve it.
A vacation rental home or villa in Hilton Head is another great way to go when visiting the island during the Heritage. It affords you some additional privacy, extra space, and amazing luxury, if you choose. If you are all about golf, choose a villa on your course of choice. Go watch the pros, then come back to your villa, unpack the cooler, and head out to apply all you learned to your own game. There are also stunning ocean front homes to consider, especially if you are bringing the gang. Private pools and hot tubs, designer decor, gourmet kitchens plus private chefs and maid service are just some of the amenities awaiting you and your very best friends or favorite family members. The island has numerous rental management companies from which to choose, some of the most reliable being Island Getaway, Resort Rentals of Hilton Head Island, The Vacation Company, ResortQuest, Coastal Home and Villa Rentals and 800BeachMe.
Probably your best bet would be to go to the most popular web site for vacation rentals which features the top one thousand rental homes and condos on Hilton Head Island, Hilton Head Rentals, and let the experts do the work for you. A stress-free Heritage experience is what you are looking for, right?
After a day in the sun at Harbour Town, a fun night on the island is around every corner (wait, islands don’t have corners, do they?) Anyway, the choices for your night time activities is endless on Hilton Head. There are several sports bars to relive the day’s tournament activities and have a cold Barley Pop (that’s beer for you non-midwesterners) For some sweet sounds, check out the Jazz Corner in the Village at Wexford. My choice for people watching is the upscale Metropolitan, where the Martini is king and golf shirts are not, or the gritty Ryders, where the abundance of leather clothing and vodka shots will make you not mind the really loud music. Shelter Cove has a number of places right on the water that you can walk to. And if you are feeling a little on the wild side, check out the area fondly known as the Barmuda Triangle – just outside the gates of Sea Pines. You can catch a local band or guitar strummin singer almost any night of the week, inside or out.
There are three movie theaters on the island for a more subdued evening out, and feel downright cultured with tickets to a local theatrical production. The South Carolina Repertory Company, Arts Center of Coastal Carolina and Main Street Youth Theater are all here, and at least one of them will have something entertaining for your to view during your Heritage visit.
Plus, there is always just taking a stroll on the beach – it’s a lot less crowded than during the day, and the sound of the tides is the perfect lullaby. Just remember napping on the beach is all right – making it your hotel room is not.
Tourist Attractions
Well, let’s see… we have a big ocean, and lots of white sand beaches, and dolphins and championship golf courses. Do you need anything else? Here are some options in case you are one of those hard to please sorts.
You really should check out the unofficial symbol of Hilton Head Island, the Harbour Town Lighthouse while you are at the Heritage. It’s just down the road, and it doesn’t take all that long to climb to the top and check out the amazing view of beach, ocean and greens. Neat little gift shop to wander through at the top as you try to hide while you catch your breath. The Liberty Oak Tree is a fabulous spot for a photo, and during the summer is the place to be with the kids for fun filled concerts. There may well be some entertainment under those century old boughs during the Heritage also – check it out when you get here.
The Coastal Discovery Museum is small, but is a great place for all you out-of-towners to learn about the local flora and fauna, as well as island history. There are signs of the Hilton Head’s involvement in the Civil War, and the Gullah influence, in several areas on the island. For a deeper understanding of how it’s roots, make sure to take one of the many tours offered. Plus, the Museum’s nature tours are not to be missed. Unless you’re playing golf, of course. We know your priorities.
Take in the island beauty and see inside many of the “Plantations” (communities ) as you bicycle through the 45 miles of trails that weave in and around the island. Ride though Pines, Palmettos and Spanish Moss draped Live Oaks, as well as gorgeous marshes and lagoons. The terrain is easy on the legs, even little guys with little bikes can handle it. If you are feeling really adventurous, historic Savannah, Georgia is only about an hour’s drive (go during the off hours) from the island. A taste of the true south, you can stroll by stunning architecture, moss draped oaks and monuments to the town’s history. If you go, make time for a cemetery tour in this very haunted city and take lots of pictures. You never know what you might capture on film…
For an attraction that requires no walking, listening, dancing or learning of any kind, visit the Salty Dog in South Beach Marina. Push yourself and read about Jake, the bravest dog south of the Mason-Dixon line, while you drink some fruity concoction or lick up the drips of your ice cream cone.
For the ultimate in relaxation, do what I said at the beginning and just head to the beach. Chances are, you will have access from your hotel or ocean front home. If you are in a golf villa, head to Coligny Circle or Folly Field Road for the largest parking facilities. Just don’t forget your sun screen, your sun glasses or your ability to sit in wonderment and awe at one of nature’s finest creations. (That would be the Atlantic Ocean, not the girl 50 feet away in the white bikini.)
ENJOY THE HERITAGE AND MOST OF ALL HILTON HEAD ISLAND!

A brass monkey is a cocktail that is similar to a screwdriver, but contains rum instead of vodka. In some recipes that I have seen it calls for both rum and vodka. It is usually made with orange juice, pulp free works best in my opinion. It is very simple to make and taste great. Here are a couple of different recipes that have great ingredients and taste great as well ~
Brass Monkey ~

Orange juice
Add ingredients into a glass with or without ice (which ever you prefer).
Add in the orange juice and stir well.
Enjoy!

1 1/2 oz. pineapple juice
1/2 oz. 151 proof rum
In a mixer filled half full of ice, add the coconut rum and pineapple juice.
Shake well.
Pour into a glass filled with ice.
