Drinks that marry well with cigars

Think of it as creating a great recipe where the ingredients combine to make the perfect flavor. I can hand you a recipe book and some great ideas, but your pallet and interests are going to be the true judge.
You also want to consider what time of day you are enjoying your smoke and beverage. After dinner your choices may be different then late afternoon or early morning. There is no exact science.
It is worth looking at the traditional and giving you a place to start.
The most traditional you will find is Cognac. They became very popular at the same time and almost as a set. It was the famous after dinner activity. The best kind of Cognac would be the middle age bracket of cognac. It is referred to as VSOP (Very special old pale). This category indicated that the aging has been at least 4 years. It goes well with mild and medium cigars. These are by far the most of cigar beginners’ start with and many stay with.
Let’s talk about rum. Since they originally came from the same areas it would make sense they are by design made to compliment each other. It is said traditionally cigar makers made their cigar to go with their favorite drink and rum was plentiful. It is now believed that light rum is the best compliment to a cigar.
A single malt scotch is a wonderful choice. Scotch comes in such variety there isn’t enough time or cigars to try all the marriages, but my Uncle swears he is going to die trying. I believe him. Scotch never seems to be overbearing no matter what cigar you are enjoying it with.
Whiskey and cigars are a popular item. Check out the whiskey and cigar web site where they explain which should compliment each other and see if you agree.
You just must mention coffee. There again are so many varieties you should be able to find more than one combination to add to you repertoire.
Remember that it’s your taste. Experiment and enjoy.
Alcohol the Global Issue

The extreme consumption of alcohol is becoming a dilemma on a universal scale, resulting in countless social problems touching all walks of life. In northern Ireland the Chief Medical Officer – Dr Michael McBride has identified the common use of alcohol amongst the younger generation. In Northern Ireland children as young as 11 are consuming alcohol and by the age of 16 it is thought four out of five teenagers will have had an alcoholic drink in some form or other. Dr McBride suggests that the basis behind so many young people are turning to drink in Northern Ireland is to progress their social and sexual confidence and called on more awareness of the harm that alcohol can do.
Sadly excessive drinking among teenagers is having a adverse effect on communities across Northern Ireland principally within urban areas. In 2 years child crime has gone up by approximately 20% mainly fueled by alcoholic consumption among children as young as seven. In contrast, burglary, vehicle crime and criminal damage have seen modest rises while alcohol-related offences have shot up by as much as a third.
In Northern Ireland The Garda youth diversion programme has been put in place to reduce this anti social behavior with some positive results. Children suspected of crimes under this system are given the opportunity to redeem themselves by compensating or apologizing to victims. Around 60-70% of the children have not re-offended within the first year after being submitted into this venture.
Obviously these problems are not limited to Northern Ireland and across the world countries are taking their own steps to reduce the social impact of alcohol-related incidents.
In recent years millions have been invested on an annual basis by drink manufacturers in Kenya on measures to combat alcohol abuse, underage drinking and drink driving. Sales in of alcoholic beverages have shot up and these companies have invested a lot in projects to try and stem the sometimes negative impact. Advertising, warnings on bottle labels and bartender training are just some of the steps that have been put into action.
The National Alcohol Beverages Association of Kenya (Nabak) working beside The Pubs Entertainment Restaurants Association of Kenya (Perak) have been guiding the drinking habits of Kenyans by supporting alcohol selling outlets to promote sensible drinking. The results have been very positive resulting in a marked downward trend in underage drinking as a result of recent campaigns.
Other countries are using other techniques in their fight to control alcohol abuse. Australia has initiated restrictions in its Northern Territory, and in some towns photo identification must be shown when obtaining alcoholic drinks. These new procedures have not gone down well with everyone and some publicans have been subjected to abuse, but on the whole the general consensus amongst retailers is that this is a positive move in the fight against the growing social problems linked to alcohol.

Elegant yet nonchalant, sexy cocktail dresses are a must for any well-dressed womans wardrobe. They are flirty, sexy, practical, and fun to wear. You will be surprised to know that these sexy cocktail dresses have a long history dating back to the 1920s. Of course back then women were not allowed to wear sexy clothes and the cocktail dresses were usually short, waistless dresses made of silk or chiffon. But these cocktail dresses have evolved over time and today they are considered as sexy attire.
These sexy cocktail dresses can be worn to every occasion such as clubs, fancy parties, weddings, dances and even to your date. As long as it’s not a black tie affair, these hot dresses are perfect for your evening out.
The length of these cocktail dresses can be anything from mid-thigh to ankle, allowing you to choose a design and style that best accentuates your body shape. You should consider the material while choosing a cocktail dress. If you are going for a romantic evening, then choose a sexy cocktail dress of silk material. Cotton material dresses are for modest outing. One might get confused from the wealth of designs that are readily available while choosing a perfect cocktail dress. In such a scenario, these few suggestions will help you find the perfect hot dress.
The best way to look gorgeous in a sexy cocktail dress is to play up your assets be it through great legs or cleavage. However, you should be careful in flaunting your best assets while not overdoing it. A hot dress that is too short, tight, sleeveless and plunging will look sexy no doubt, but if your body is not fit for that, wearing that will give the appearance of trying too hard.
Give emphasis on sleek and luxurious fabrics while selecting sexy cocktail dresses as that will add a hint of sophistication to the dress. When it comes to revealing cleavage, remember sometimes less is even more. For example, a side slit can have an elegant and sexy look that grabs attention at skin without being much revealing. Shoulders, or your bare back, a little mystery is always better than revealing way too much.
Always go for a cocktail dress that is fitted through the bust and the waist. Hot dresses made of fabrics such as satin and silk helps you move freely. If youre plus-size, opt for dark colors as that will always make you look slimmer. For those who have full hips and thighs, choose a long cocktail halter dress to completely cover legs and thighs. If you are blessed with a large bust, you can flaunt your asset by wearing a low cut cocktail dress or divert attention to the legs by wearing a two-toned hot dress with a dark top and a flashy skirt. Empire waists and full skirts designed cocktail dress can also help conceal any imperfections.
Avoid flashy colors and excessive add-ons like faux diamonds or sequins while choosing sexy cocktail dresses as they will look a bit overdone. Go for subtle, uncomplicated, understated styles which will give an elegant look. Add flashy earrings and necklace, matching pair of heels, designer handbag as accessories with your sexy cocktail dress and now you are completely ready to win many hearts on your special evening out.
How computer games can be bad for you

Anything taken to an extreme can be bad for you, a lot of things in life should be taken in moderation. You could easily compare games to something such as myspace that has been seen to promote underage drinking, drugs and kidnappings. As parents they are the ones in control or at least should be of what their child plays. A parent has the responsibility to know when their child is mature enough to play the “violent” games. Games have inspired many things and pushed for the progression in computers and many other technologies.
There are those extreme gamers out there that all they do is play a game all day and night, but that is not to say they still don’t work and are part of the community. They still buy food, they still go to work, they just choose to spend their free time in a different manner so don’t berate them for it. Parents that have teens that game too much instead of doing school or what they’re suppose to, you are the parent, you’re still in charge till they leave the house. Don’t forget there are always worse addictions out there, at least you know where they are Friday night, safe at home in front of a monitor.
Such places like myspace that promote popular culture of taking pictures of yourself drinking or doing drugs, must be worse than playing a game right? So far no little kid has been on a mmorpg and gotten kidnapped so that it made the local news. Sure kids have placed the blame on games for their violent behavior, but games are out there for the parents to monitor and decide what the child plays. How long will parents use it as a scapegoat before they take the initiative to take the time out and know about their children.
Gamers have a passion for what they play much like Trekkie’s have for Star Trek. If you look at the technology we have today, you can look in depth at the technology they have in Star Trek and find a very close relationship. Things people are passion about come into reality and inspire new ideas. It takes what is only imaginary and in a game to being a real, touchable, usable thing. Remember games are only bad for you when not taken in moderation and/or in the hands of irresponsible people. So talk to your friends, significant others, children, help them to see whats happened if it’s gotten that bad.
Young people and computer games

A battle has been raging for many years over whether young people and computer games are a good mix.
My husband and I owned arcades and placed video and arcade games in various establishments in the 1970’s and 1980’s. Prior to that time my husband worked for his sister and brother-in-law in the arcade and pool hall business. City fathers, landlords, and parents fought the business every inch of the way. When people at our church would ask what we did for a living, we always hesitated to tell them.
Young people loved playing the pinball machines and especially those first video games. We would have competitions for the highest score and the winner would always win a prize. These kids were the ones that did not fit into the “slots” that society had for young people at the time. Most of them were fine young people trying to find out where they fit. Now, some thirty years later, some of those same young people have contacted us and shared with us how it was a highlight of their youth to come to the arcade and “hang out.” My husband always ran a place that did not tolerate swearing, drugs, drinking, etc.
The gaming industry has seen many changes over the last thirty years but there are still those who are vehemently opposed to “gaming.” The method is a little different. We are not limited to just pinball, video games, penny arcade machines, etc.
At the present time, the market has expanded into every area of life. One can play games on their cell phone, hand-held gaming system, television gaming systems, and games on the computer. Gaming systems are moving toward even being physically active while playing. Some gaming systems promote activities like dancing and sports. You can practice at home in the privacy of your living room before you get out in front of others. Senior citizens can play a simulated bowling game even if they don’t have the strength to pick up a bowling ball.
Computer games can be played individually or they can be played as a group. Many young people like to play computer games because they are competing against themselves or other people in a way that can be anonymous. Anonymity is the player’s choice. If their gaming character fails, they don’t have people in their face confirming that they didn’t measure up. They can choose to try a different game or retry the game they have played previously. It is a safe place for working at something without criticism. In a world where competition is so great in schools and in the workplace,
A Recipe Collection–top 5 Most Requested Summer Drinks
September 28, 2009 by The Cocktail Lounge
Filed under Cocktail Recipes
When most people host summer parties, they usually have the basic alcoholic beverages, like beer and wine, but rarely do you see a host offer a selection of really special summer drinks.
I have perfected my list of offerings over the years and now I share my “Top 5 Most Requested Summer Drinks” with you (in no particular order).
Number One Most Requested Summer Cocktail–Limoncello Mint Lemonade
1/2 cup lemonade concentrate
1/4 cup fresh mint leaves
1 tbsp. fresh lemon juice
Ice cubes
1/4 cup Limoncello (lemon liqueur)
1/2 cup club soda
Lemon slices and mint for garnish
In a small pitcher, “muddle” mint leaves together with lemonade concentrate and lemon juice. Muddle means to bruise the leaves so they release their flavor. I use the end of a wooden spoon.
Stir in ice cubes, Limoncello and club soda and pour into 4 glasses. Top them off with a lemon slice, a sprig of fresh mint and an umbrella.
Makes 4-10 oz. drinks.
Number Two Most Requested Summer Cocktail–Pomegranate Blueberry Martini
Made with 1/2 juice so not as strong as most martinis.
1/2 part vodka
1 part pomegranate mix (I use “Rose” brand)
1 part pomegranate blueberry juice (I use “Tropicana” brand)
Orange slices for garnish
Shake ingredients with ice for 1 minute in a martini shaker. Pour into some martini glasses and garnish with an orange slice. Crisp and refreshing!
Number Three Most Requested Summer Cocktail–Pineapple Bleu
2-oz. Hypnotic Liqueur
1-oz. Grey Goose Vodka
Splash of pineapple juice
Lemon twist for garnish
Shake together Hypnotic, vodka and ice until chilled. Pour into a martini glass, top with pineapple juice and garnish with a lemon twist and an umbrella.
Number Four Most Requested Summer Cocktail–Sangria Punch
This one is great for summer barbeques because you can easily make it a pitcher at a time or can serve it from a punch bowl.
1 lemon
1 lime
1 orange
1-1/2 cups rum (spiced rum works well too)
1/2 cup white sugar
1 (750 milliliter) bottle dry red wine
1 cup orange juice
Chill the fruit, rum, orange juice and wine. If desired, make ice cubes out of the orange juice. This is a good way to keep drinks icey cold without diluting them.
Slice the lemon, lime and orange into thin rounds and place in a large glass pitcher. Pour in the rum and sugar. Chill in refrigerator for 2 hours to develop the flavors.
When ready to serve, crush the fruit lightly with a wooden spoon and stir in the wine and orange juice (cubes if you made them). Adjust sweetness to taste.
Number Five Most Requested Summer Cocktail–Fruited Brandy Punch
This one has become a favorite at my home and a lot of the parties I attend, most likely because everyone loves it and you can make a huge amount and serve it in a punch bowl.
1/2 part brandy (I use Christian Brothers brand)
1 part lemon-lime soda
2 parts fruit juice (Cranberry-Peach blend is my favorite)
1/2 bag frozen fruit (Blueberries and strawberries look great)
1 fruited ice ring (see recipe below)
Slices of lemons, limes and oranges, if desired
Mix fruit juice and frozen fruit together in a nice punch bowl or container.
Pour in lemon-lime soda, gently stir and then float an ice ring on top (see recipe below). Rather than spike the punch, I serve the brandy on the side so my guests who prefer non-alcoholic punch can drink it too.
To make ice ring
Pour 1-2 cups of the juice mixture from above into a Bundt pan or another mold. Add some of the fruit and/or fresh citrus slices. Freeze overnight.
Just before serving, set the pan into some hot water to loosen the ice ring and then turn it into the punch bowl. It makes a really beautiful presentation, cools the punch and since it’s made with juice, it will not water down the punch. Perfect!
This recipe can easily be altered so you can serve it from a Drink Fountain which is really gaining popularity lately. Just leave out the fruit and the ice ring.
So, now you have five classic summer cocktails to WOW your guests with. They will be so surprised when you hand them one of these special summer drinks instead of the usual beer and wine.
All About Vodka Brands
September 28, 2009 by The Cocktail Lounge
Filed under Alcohol Shots
Like everything else in life, we want to know which is the ‘best’ vodka. Which vodka is most superior to others. And like everything else in life, we realize that there is no one single answer. For example, I use the latest Intel Pentium Core Duo Processor, as I require it to power my media center, on the other hand, my Grandfather still uses a 11 year old IBM Thinkpad with 4 MB RAM running Windows 3.11 with Wordpad!
Anyway, back to Vodka. Vodka is defined as a neutral spirit devoid of any distinct characteristics such as odour, taste or colour. Considering the above definition all vodkas should be the same and the brand shouldn’t matter. This is true to some extent, in the sense, that the final product of all the brands are more or less similar to each other and while mixed in a blood mary, there is little or no discernable distinction between them. However, if you plan to have them as shots, on the rocks or in a martini, then you are well advised to consume a premium brand.
There are a lot of vodkas out there. And each one is trying to catch your eye, with refreshing marketing, stylish bottles and happening events. This is because of the above noted fact, that the product is more or less same, and hence, marketing plays a big role.
Okay. Now since we are clear about what vodka actually is, lets look at some of the brands. (If you are interested more about the history and other nuances of Vodka, read my article ‘All About Vodka’) I am not affiliated with any of them and I have no particular favourite among them either. So be assured that whatever is said herein is completely unbiased and in the best interest of vodka.
Lets start with the world best selling vodka. Remember, the phrase is ‘best selling’, it doesn’t make the best vodka on the planet. I guess every vodka drinker knows it. Smirnoff. Smirnoff was the first American brand of Vodka, which was bought over from Vladimir Smirnov of Russia. The Smirnoff No. 21 is the most widely sold vodka in the world and is an extremely good example of classical vodka. It has little discerning character, and does not pamper you with slight flavours or a mellow follow through. If you don’t like to think too much and are on a budget, this is the vodka to go for. Have it chilled and experience the Russian in you. Smirnoff also comes in blue and black labels which are of increasing strength. It has also launched numerous flavoured vodkas such as Green Apple Twist, Citrus Twist, Lemon Twist and many more. They are great to have in martinis and light cocktails.
Next up, Grey Groose. Now this is on that has had its fair share of Hollywood exposure. You can hear almost every celebrity asking for a Grey Goose Martini. This vodka brand is truly a marketing brilliance. Winter wheat being distilled with natural spring waters in a French Distillery is surely going to make some heads turn. It is this approach to vodka, that has made Grey Goose a brand to reckon with. But, nothing to be taken away, this is really great vodka to have in your martini. It comes in three flavours: L’Orange, Le Citron and La Vanille. The Citron is great to have in a Lemon Drop Martini.
The third among the most marketed brands is Absolut. This Swedish vodka has the one of the largest number of flavoured vodkas in the market. Its global marketing strategy seems to have paid off in recent times and is considered to be a truly superior vodka in many places in the world. Its neutral variety comes in blue and red labels with increasing strengths. The red bottle (50 % vol) is a really smooth spirit with almost no discernarable taste of its own. The blue bottle mixes extremely well with almost all mixers and makes it great in most cocktails. The flavoured varieties too are very good and for the adventurous there are no dearth of varieties to try from.
Now, lets move onto the lesser marketed, premium brands. I’ll start with what most vodka drinkers and experts consider a truly great and ‘almost perfect’ vodka. Stolichnaya is what it claims to be “a true Russian vodka”. It was founded at the Cristill Distillery in Moscow and is now manufactured in ex-Soviet republics (Kazakhstan and Ukraine). It is quadruple distilled though quartz sand and finally passed through a woven cloth, to give you a vodka free from any flavours or odours. This one is great to have on the rocks.
Next on the list is Belvedere. This is a Polish vodka. However, unlike other Polish vodka this one is made from rye rather than potatoes. The experts are always confused about this one. Many hold it in high regard, while others suggest that the other brands mentioned here, are far superior. For the record, I like it. Still one could argue that with so many different brands with better marketing and “brand appeal”, this vodka still leaves you with something to desire more from.
Our last entry on this discussion would be Belvedere’s sibling: Chopin. However, unlike its sibling, Chopin is made from potatoes; the way authentic polish vodka should. Even though for many years, potato based vodkas have been frowned upon by Russians as inferior, the truth lies in the fact, that with the right distillery, whatever be the ingredient, you can produce superior vodka. And Chopin is a great example of the same. This vodka is crisp and has a sweet and sour green apple tinge to it. It’s the only potato based vodka that is held with such high regard and just for this sake, I urge you to try it at least once. Your Polish experience will definitely be worth it.
There are some other lovely vodka brands as well. Vox, Ketel One, Three Olives and Jewel Of Russia are just a few to name. Vodka, like other spirits, is full of tradition and variety. And to cover all would be an arduous if not impossible task. I hope not to offend anybody with my views. They are mine and others may not agree. As I always maintain wines and spirits are very personal in nature. The best wine or spirit is always the one you enjoy most! With that I humbly conclude this article. Hope you enjoyed it, as much as I need writing it.
Alcohol Detox Isn’t “Trendy” But it’s A Problem Drinker’s Best Shot
September 28, 2009 by The Cocktail Lounge
Filed under Alcohol Shots
While the world reeled at the news of the death of actor Heath Ledger from a lethal combination of prescription drugs – the trendy new mass killer on the celebrity drug scene – another celebrity with a decidedly untrendy alcohol addiction checked into an alcohol detox facility this week to confront her demons.
We were surprised to read that 25-year-old Kirsten Dunst of “Spiderman” fame entered an alcohol detox and rehab center this week, exactly a year after Anna Nicole Smith died from the same kind of scenario that killed Heath Ledger – a lethal prescription drug combination. Dunst had been battling her alcohol addiction for some time, friends said, and finally realized it was time for detox and rehab.
Prescription drugs seem to be the “trendy” way to go because almost every day we read how some celebrity somewhere – or someone in our own town – is heading for drug rehab or the morgue because of exotic cocktails of prescription opioids, benzodiazepines and psych drugs of some kind. Alcohol is often reported as part of the prescription drug mix, but it always sounds a little quaint. Alcohol? How old fashioned! Dying surrounded by prescription drug containers sounds way cooler than dying surrounded by empty beer cans and wine bottles.
We tend to discount alcohol addiction because it just isn’t trendy, it isn’t “now”, it isn’t young and beautiful and glamorous. Sure, we all heard about Lindsay Lohan’s alcohol abuse, but it was glamorized by her simultaneous cocaine and prescription drug abuse. Same for a ton of other hot young Hollywood celebs. Straight ahead drinkers are supposed to be older, like Mel Gibson who was sent for alcohol detox treatment by a California judge, or 48-year-old Sean Young, best known for her roles in “Blade Runner” and “No Way Out”, who entered alcohol detox this week. Even Kiefer Sutherland, who not only needed alcohol detox but spent 48 days in a California jail as a result of multiple DUIs, at 41 years old is an “acceptable” alcohol abuser, okay to take note of and then just forget about.
But Kirsten Dunst? At 25 years old? C’mon! Kirsten is America’s sweetheart. She’s Spiderman’s girl friend! She can’t be a “juicer.” What about Amy Winehouse, you ask, who’s only 24? We’re okay with Amy because she’s, well, British – and we all know Brits are massive drinkers – and anyway she’s a hard-rockin’ blues singer and booze is part of that package. Remember Janis Joplin and Southern Comfort? ‘Nuff said. Except to say that a modern medical alcohol detox program probably would have saved Janis’ life.
But Kirsten Dunst entering alcohol detox and rehab?
So take a moment, and reflect on the facts: Dozens, if not hundreds of celebrities battle alcohol addiction every year, both young and old, according to news stories. Many enter alcohol detox centers to recover the life they’ve lost. Also, alcohol addiction is this nation’s – and probably the world’s – number one addiction, and has been for as long as anyone has paid attention to such things. Something like 18 million alcohol abusers in America need alcohol detox and treatment right now, but according to federal surveys only a fraction are receiving the treatment they need. And don’t forget that America’s colleges and universities are so saturated with alcohol addiction and abuse that alcohol detox centers are being constructed right on some campuses.
The need for alcohol detox in America literally dwarfs the need for any other type of addiction treatment. Alcohol abuse isn’t pretty, it isn’t neat and it isn’t trendy. And it strikes at families in every city, town and village, ruining lives and killing just as many people, if not more, than all other addictive drugs combined – it just takes a lot longer, unless it’s a drunken car crash, an excessive binge, or a despondent alcoholic suicide.
Fortunately, a modern medical alcohol detox program followed by alcohol rehab offers the best chance, by far, for anyone with a drinking problem to permanently handle alcohol addiction and get one’s life back.
