Drink recipes: Whiskey sour – Part 5

The point of a good Whiskey Sour is to elevate the flavor of a good whiskey. With this in mind, here are four Whiskey Sour recipes that differ slightly based on the kind of whiskey used. Choose your recipe based on whether you prefer a blended, bourbon, Jack Daniels, or Canadian whiskey.
BLENDED WHISKEY SOUR
2 ounces of blended whiskey
the juice of half a lemon
1/2 teaspoon of powdered sugar
1 maraschino cherry
1/2 slice of lemon
Combine the whiskey, lemon juice, and sugar in a shaker filled with ice. Shake vigorously and strain into a sour or rocks glass and garnish with the lemon slice and top with the cherry.
BOURBON SOUR
2 ounces of bourbon
2 tablespoons of fresh squeezed lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon of superfine bar sugar
1 orange or lemon slice according to preference
1 maraschino cherry
Combine the bourbon, lemon juice, and sugar into a shaker filled with ice. Shake well until the sugar has been thoroughly disolved. Strain contents into a sour or rocks glass and garnish with the citrus slice and maraschino cherry.
JACK DANIELS TENNESSEE SOUR
2 ounces of Jack Daniels
1 teaspoon of fresh squeezed lime juice
5 ounces of sweet and sour mix
1 orange slice
Combine the Jack Daniels and sour mid in a sour or rocks glass filled with ice. Add lime juice and top with the orange slice.
CANADIAN WHISKEY SOUR
2 ounces of Canadian whiskey
the juice of half a lemon
1/2 teaspoon of superfine bar sugar
slice of lemon
1 maraschino cherry
Combine the whiskey, lemon juice, and sugar in a cocktail shaker filled with ice, and shake vigorously until the sugar is fully dissolved. Strain into a sour or rocks glass and top with the lemon slice and cherry.
Drink recipes: Prince of wales
December 17, 2009 by The Cocktail Lounge
The Prince of Wales cocktail is said to have been created by Queen Victoria’s son, Albert Edward in the 1860s, during the time that he was the Prince of Wales. While he was the Prince of Wales, Edward had quite the reputation as a drinker, playboy and all-round bon vivant. On the death of Queen Victoria in 1901, and at the age of 60, Albert Edward became King Edward VII. He was the great-grandfather of the current queen of England, Elizabeth.
There are two very different cocktails bearing this name that I could find, like with most cocktail recipes I’m sure there are many, many variations. Both of these recipes are for individual servings.
The tools you will need for each recipe are the same; a cocktail shaker, a strainer, and a glass.
The first recipe I found is for the best-known Prince of Wales cocktail:
Add some cracked ice to a small cocktail shaker, then add
3/4 oz of madeira wine or port
3/4 oz of brandy or cognac
1/4 oz of orange curacao or Cointreau
1 dash of Angostura bitters
Gently shake the ingredients and strain the liquid into a chilled cocktail glass. You can chill a glass by setting it in the freezer for ten to fifteen minutes. Serving the drink in a smaller martini glass, which is known as a Nick and Nora, is suggested by many bartenders. However, the cocktail can also be served in a champagne flute.
Top the cocktail off with some champagne, sparkling wine or white wine.
Add an orange or lemon slice.
Serve.
The second cocktail recipe is simpler and contains fewer ingredients than the first:
Add some cracked ice to a small cocktail shaker, then add
1 1/2 oz of gin
1/2 oz of pineapple juice
1 egg white
Gently shake the ingredients and strain the liquid into a chilled cocktail glass. The cocktail also be served in a highball glass.
Serve.
Some Prince of Wales cocktail recipes also suggest that you place a sugar-cube in the glass before you pour. Also, you can basically serve the drink in any sized glass you wish; it all depends on how much champagne or sparkling wine you wish to add to the first recipe. However you decide to have it, I’m sure you will enjoy it.

Drink recipes: Appletini or apple martini
November 22, 2009 by The Cocktail Lounge
One would think the Appletini would be a cinch to make. Vodka and a little apple liqueur and voila, one has the perfect cocktail set before them. Not so. This little number is a bit more sophisticated than expected. It can be a breeze for sure, but only if one wants mediocre results. Why settle for average when the exceptional is only a jigger and shake away?
The Appletini is a contemporary cocktail on the International Bartenders Association’s list of official cocktails. It is classified among the family of duo and trio drinks, meaning it is comprised of two or three ingredients. This particular family of drinks is remarkable due to the nature of its flexibility. All of the cocktails begin with only two or three ingredients, making them a fantastic building block for many more drinks to discover and create. This paves the way for duo and trio drinks to go from the ordinary to the extraordinary with only minor changes in dashes or quarter to half ounce additions of bitters, liqueurs and juices. The Appletini is no different. It can go beyond the comic book Green Goblin color to the amazing flavorful cocktail that sends the taste buds zinging with a few minor changes.
Take for instance the basic duo recipe:
Appletini Duo
2 ounces Vodka
1 ounce Green Apple Liqueur
Pour ingredients into cocktail shaker filled 1/3 full of ice. Shake. Strain into a well chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with an apple slice.
The basic recipe is uneventful. It gets the job done. There is indeed apple flavor and the punch of liquor in it, but no layering of flavor to make it interesting. Some adjust the ratios and add apple juice at this point, making this a trio drink.
Appletini Trio
1 ounce Vodka
1 ounce Green Apple Liqueur
1 ounce Apple Juice
Pour ingredients into a cocktail shaker filled 1/3 full of ice. Shake. Strain into a well chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with an apple slice.
This trio Appletini possibly has a bit of layering to it, but now it seems a wee bit watered down. While using fresh juice in fruit based cocktails is always a plus, it is doubtful most would have fresh apple juice in the refrigerator. Even so, apple juice is still thin and weak. Fresh squeezed will always be better in a cocktail, even if it is not the fresh squeezed juice you may expect.
The answer to the multilayered, abundantly flavored Appletini was created by Dale DeGroff for Natalie Cole and her manager for Rupert Murdoch’s seventieth birthday party. You can read a small quip about it in his book, The Craft of the Cocktail, and acquire an abundance of other essential cocktails you won’t believe you ever went without. Below is DeGroff’s version of the indispensable Appletini with fresh lemon juice.
Sour Apple Martini Dale DeGroff from The Craft of the Cocktail
2 ounces Citrus Vodka
1/2 ounce Sour Apple Pucker
1/2 ounce Cointreau
3/4 ounce Fresh Lemon Juice
Thin Slice of Granny Smith Apple, for garnish
Place first four ingredients in a cocktail shaker filled 1/3 full of ice. Shake until chilled. Strain into a well chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with the apple slice.
The Waterfront Ale House in New York City has a specialty Apple Martini using their own infused vodka with pear, apples, cloves and cinnamon. You will find the recipe for this Apple Martini in The Craft of the Cocktail as well. It is definitely a must see!
Drink recipes: Summer Cocktails

When I think of summer I think of long, hot days, I think of relaxation and I think of finding a nice patio away from the hustle and bustle of the crowd. To me there is nothing more enjoyable than meeting friends on the patio of our favorite local pub or restaurant to have a few cold drinks. I like a long, summer spent lounging under an umbrella, enjoying the heat, and catching up with my friend’s lives.
My favorite summer drink is the gin and tonic. I like the fruity taste of the gin and the fizz of the tonic. Of course, it must be topped with either a slice or a wedge of lime.
Here are a few cocktail recipes that should help get to you into the summer mood:
Gin and Tonic
The gin and tonic was originally developed as a medicine to help fight malaria. When the British were colonizing India it was discovered that they were very susceptible to the disease. Tonic water was developed in India to disguise the taste of quinine which helped fight the disease; gin was added to make the drink more palatable to the westerners.
2 ounce of gin (I prefer Bombay Sapphire gin but any gin will do)
1/2 ounce of tonic (you can have more to taste, I don’t like my tonic to overwhelm the gin)
Lime wedge or slice
Serve in a highball glass filled with ice (as with everything in this recipe, you can add as much or as little ice as you wish. However, the drink must be served ice cold.)
Wine Spritzers
1/2 cup of wine (red or white, although the majority seem to be made with white wine)
1/2 cup of sparkling water or club soda
Lemon slice
Pour the wine in an ice-filled glass, add the sparkling water and add a lemon slice.
Margarita Cocktail
Margarita’s remind me of the cruise I took to Mexico years ago. This is a recipe for the traditional margarita.
1 1/2 ounce of tequila
1 ounce triple sec
1 ounce lime juice
Rub the rim of a martini glass with lime juice and dip into salt. Add all the ingredients in a cocktail shaker filled with ice and shake; strain into the glass.
Pina Colada
The pina colada reminds me of the tropics. It feels like you are drinking dessert.
3 ounces of rum
3 tablespoons of coconut cream
3 tablespoons of crushed pineapple
Add the ingredients to a blender filled with 2 cups of crushed ice. Beat on high for about 30 seconds. Pour into a highball glass.
Basic cocktails all bartenders should know

Every bartender needs to know a yummy, creamy cocktail that the girls will want to try & for that you can’t go past a Toblerone. Take 30ml Frangelico, 15ml Baileys, 15ml Kahule, 75ml cream & 1 tsp honey, pop in a blender with a little ice then strain into a martini glass. I suggest crumbling some flake on the top for a garnish, or you could just use choc sprinkles. It’s guaranteed to make them come back for more.
Next every bartender needs to be able to make a Martini for all the James Bond wannabes that are always waiting to come out of the woodwork. The classic recipe is 5 parts gin to 1 part dry vermouth or if they want a vodka martini replace the gin with vodka & use a sweet vermouth.
You should always have a refreshing, easy to make, colourful cocktail and what’s better than a Blue Lagoon. It has never been easier to make, just fill a tall glass with ice, then add 30ml of vodka, 15 ml of blue curacao, top up with lemonade and stir. How easy and yet looks fantastic thanks to the blue curacao. Then you can always astound them with a Purple Lagoon which isn’t as well known. Take 25ml vodka, 25 ml blue curacao & 10ml of grenadine, top up with lemonade and stir it truly is a heavenly looking cocktail.
Thanks to Sex in the City you will absolutely have to know how to make a Cosmopolitan, because everyone wants to be either Carrie, Samantha, Miranda or Charlotte. You will need 1 oz vodka, oz cointreau & 1oz cranberry juice, combine all of these ingredients with ice & two squeezed lime wedges in a cocktail shaker, shake, then strain into a martini glass. Garnished with a lemon twist these are absolutely delicious.
By the end of the night someone will be singing if you like pina colada’s and getting caught in the rain, if you’re not into yoga and you’ve got half a brain.’, then someone will ask you to make them a pina colada. Take 1 shot of white rum, 2 shots of coconut cream, 2 shots of pineapple juice and 1 cup of ice. Place all of the ingredients into a blender, blend until smooth and serve in a Collins glass.
Then of course you need something bubbly and the old champagne cocktail is very dated so add a Flirtini to your books. You will need 1 shot of vodka, 1 shot of pineapple juice and 4 shots of champagne. Basically pour champagne into the glass, then add the vodka and pineapple juice and stir.
You will also really need to know a few shots, because the men don’t want to be seen drinking girly drinks’ so have something like a squashed frog in your repertoire. Mix together 25ml advocate & 25ml midori and put in a shot glass then add a drop of grenadine and it will look like a squashed frog, hence the name. For some reason guys find this hilarious after a few drinks.
A nice way to end the evening is with a mint slice which is simply 1 part peppermint schnapps with 1 part baileys layered on the top, very yummy.
My favourite shot is sometimes called a Vibrator in Australia & New Zealand and is called a Carry on Clubber in the UK. You take 1 part banana liquor, 1 part butterscotch schnapps & 1 part baileys, layered in that order.
There you have it, enough cocktails to start your bartending with, the best thing about cocktails is you can always make a combination up yourself, name it and voila.

Cape Cod Liquor Cocktail Drink
(One Serving)
1 1/2 oz. Russian Vodka
4 oz. 100% Cranberry Juice
One should purchase best brand of Russian Vodka that is available in their area.
(But, if one already has a favorite vodka, they could use it instead of the Russian Vodka.)
Combine the Russian vodka with the 100% Cranberry Juice in a cocktail shaker.
Shake in the shaker until blended together.
Pour into a highball glass (Or see below suggestion.)
Add crushed ice to the cocktail in the highball glass.
A slice of lime or lemon can be used for garnishment.
Drink and enjoy.
Glasses: Any unusual shaped glasses can be used. The more unusual the prettier the drink.
Make it a little different:
Give the glass an usual look and taste by dipping the glass rim into lemon juice and then dipping it into sugar.
To make crushed ice:
Place ice cubes in plastic bag and crush using a hammer. If hammer not available any heavy unbreakable item can be used.
Decorations: Any party type decorations like swizzle sticks , umbrellas, straws etc. can be used to make it look more decorative. These can be purchased at most party stores and sometimes even at some grocery stores.
Remember this drink is very high in alchoholic content so one should be careful not to drink this if they are planning to drive etc.
