Cocktail parties can be incredible fun or a total flop all at the flip of a switch. Think about the best party you ever went to, and try to plan a similar one. Ask others for help or enlist the services of a party planner. Think positive thoughts. It is the best way to avoid negative vibes.
First and foremost, think before you are unable to. Make any necessary arrangements ahead of time. If you are having a party, plan for everyone to stay over, rather than driving. Pull sleeping bags out and have an old fashioned sleep over. You could also check with your local cab company about providing transportation for your guests. Some places will work with you. No one likes a drunk driver.
Set a good mood. Don’t drink in an atmosphere that is going to cause problems. Play music and have activities for your guests to do. If people get bored, they might search for other things to do. (Like picking fights or driving drunk.) Be a good host; mingle with all your guests. Encourage everyone to relax and have fun. Keep in mind when you are planning the party, that less is more. Don’t invite a hundred people if you can’t take care of a hundred people. They became your responsibility when they stepped onto your property.
Accept suggestions. Ask your guests what they want to drink. Some people may prefer more or less alcohol than others. Aim to please. Try to stick to a recipe in general. If you have no idea what you are doing, then the drink isn’t going to turn out that great. Taste test your mixture as you go. Make a small amount and try it. If it isn’t that great, you can always start over, rather than making a whole pitcher of something no one wants. If you don’t know what you are doing, ask someone for help, or research recipes. Presentation means a lot. Fix drinks that look good. People don’t want to drink something that looks like it has already been drunk. Remember that ice melts, use it moderately. There is nothing worse than a watered down drink. If you over ice, you will probably throw away more than what actually gets drunk.
Don’t down your drink and get soused quickly. If you can not handle your drink, then sip it slowly. Do not ruin everyone else’s fun by making them have to baby-sit you all night. If you think you have had enough, then you probably have. Don’t push yourself. There are health risks involved in drinking, take those into consideration before you gorge yourself. Try to stay in a good frame of mind. Don’t be a redneck. Words can be hurtful. You may not remember what happened the night before but chances are someone else will. Don’t say or do something you may later on regret.
Offer your guests food. Drinking on an empty stomach is never good. Snack foods and finger foods go well with alcohol. Set out potato chips, crackers, cheese, vegetables, and things that you can snack on all night long. You could even ask your guests to bring a covered dish, if you don’t want to spend all day in the kitchen. Chocolate is something best avoided when you are drinking. It just does not mix well with alcohol.
Just relax and have fun. If something does happen that you don’t plan for, make the best of it. Don’t let a simple situation ruin the whole party. Try to encourage others to get along and be happy. Drinking is never a good time to have deep discussions or boxing matches. Be careful, be happy, and be responsible, and you can’t go wrong.
